Facta Non-Verba: NSYSU International Programs Take Action Towards A Better Environment Through Beach Cleaning Activity

Right now, the earth needs the younger generation to take care of it more than ever. #NSYSU is proud to have students who excel in both academics and extracurricular activities and take action to make the world a better place. On the 27th of November, the Student Association held "Cleaning The Beach And Dining” to raise #environmentalawareness.

More than 30 students took part in the event. The group met up at Gushan Ferry Dock and made their way to Cijin Beach. The participants enjoyed not only the beautiful scenery but also the time chatting with the other participants during the ten-minute drive. The Deputy Director of the International Programs, Prof. Frank Wong and Professors Ryan Brading, despite their busy schedule, attended the activity as well. Professor Frank Wong gave a short speech thanking the crowd and advised the students to be careful while cleaning. The President of SA, Joy, then talked about environmental awareness and announced the safety instructions.

The participants worked in groups and roamed all around the park and the beach, collecting trash and making the surrounding cleaner and healthier. Aurora Elsa, a 2nd-year GHRM MBA student, remarked that she always enjoys attending events organized by the SA, but this one was special as it was not just enjoyable but timely and relevant as well. Kudos to SA for holding another exciting event.

GHRM MBA And IBMBA Students Finishes 2nd At CSR Captain Program: Sam Lee Recalls Her Fond Memories

1.jpg

NSYSU GHRM MBA students have been winning competitions one after another this year, and they have done it once again. Sam Lee, GHRM MBA 2nd year student, finished 2nd at the prestigious CSR Captain Program along with her teammates Erica Liu and Rossie Lim, 1st-year IBMBA students, and Mashi Zhang, 2nd-year IBMBA student. Today, we share Sam's experience from the prestigious competition.

The competition offers students an opportunity to understand Taiwan's corporate culture while responding to global CSR movements. The competition involves the formulation of a team, including local and international students. The first prize winner of the "CTCI CSR Scholarship" receives NT$20,000, second prize winners receive NT$16,000, and the third prize winners receive NT$12,000.

Sam found out about the competition through GHRM Family and CTCIEF Facebook page's, and when she was asked by her friend Mashi to join her team, she gladly accepted. Sam's team was known as REMS, which not only stands for 'Responsibility and Enthusiasm Makes Sustainability' but is also an abbreviation of the first letter of each of the group members' names.

For their topic, Sam and her group members were assigned to help DiDi-a non-profit organization that aims to make the world a better place for the virtually impaired by assisting them in finding gainful employment. To help DiDi, Sam and her group did intensive research. She shares:

"We used SWOT analysis to understand more about the company, then choose one problem – customer retention to solve. We come up with the idea – creating more products to attract customers (because if customers join their events, they never join the next time), our ideas include games in the darks that customers can play together and understand their partners, or dining/tea in the dark which focus on enterprise, organizations,… to solve the problems in business, or understand more their employees,…"

Through the competition, Sam got to befriend amazing people who understood each other and were willing to work together. In the near future, she hopes to join more competitions with her REMS group members. It wasn't always easy for Sam and her group members, but whenever they were indecisive, they would hold a vote or ask the organization for guidance. In the end, they persevered and came through. Sam notes that teamwork, friendship, and learning to be open-minded towards others' ideas were the most valuable things she learned from the competition.

When the results were announced, it was a moment of bliss for Sam and her team, but they were also a little disappointed that they didn't win first prize. Sam shares her thoughts about finding out the results:

"That was so amazing because at that time I presented not well, but Rossie rocked it, she helped our team to finished our parts on time and delivered fulfilled messages to the judgement. We were really happy and a little disappointed because we were not lucky enough to win the first prize"

Sam is grateful for her team members and shares a short but meaningful message:"Thank you, my friends, 'cause you come to my life. I will always remember you guys. Save our days 28/11/2020"

We are beyond delighted that GHRM MBA and IBMBA students continuously bring prestige to the university by performing stupendously at competitions. Congratulations to Sam and her team, and we wish them only the best for their future endeavors.

Guest Lecture by Professor Germain Thiombiano from International Master Program in Asia-Pacific Affairs (IMAPA)

On November 23, 2020, the lecturer of Cross-Cultural Management from GHRM MBA program, Professor David Andersson, invited Professor Germain Thiombiano from International Master Program in Asia-Pacific Affairs (IMAPA) to talk about Intercultural Communication. Professor Germain from Burkina Faso in West Africa received his master's degree in International Business MBA Program (IBMBA) in 2010 and Ph.D. degree in Institute of China and Asia-Pacific Studies in 2019 from National Sun Yat-sen University.

In the beginning, Professor Germain mentioned that the workplace presents the most opportunities for intercultural encounters and language differences are the most challenging intercultural communication. Professor also gave an example of cultural difference. He mentioned that many of us have experience in dealing with cultural differences in a business context – from working in a restaurant with multicultural kitchen and serving staff, or perhaps in a business that exports or communicates with overseas clients and consumers. Intercultural communication issues also can arise in both domestic and international cultural settings.

In Professor Germain’s talk, he compared domestic and global economy growth. He mentioned that the number of businesses owned by minorities has increased dramatically in the past 10 years and about a third of venture-backed companies that went public between 2006 and 2012 had at least one immigrant founder. As for global growth, intercultural communication occurs in many different types of business settings, including domestic contexts with multicultural workforces and international contexts.

Finally, we would like to thank Professor Germain Thiombiano for his insightful speech on behalf of the GHRM MBA program. It is our great hope that every student in this course will gain valuable knowledge from Professor Germain Thiombiano’s lecture.

NSYSU International Programs Celebrates “Strength in Diversity” Through Culture Sharing Event

NSYSU boasts one of the most diverse university environments in Taiwan. GHRM MBA and IBMBA programs maintain a full English teaching faculty and attract accomplished students from all across the globe. The 'Culture Sharing Event' is held annually to celebrate this diversity, and this year, the event was held on the 23rd of October 2020 at NSYSU. The event started with the President of the Student Association, international programs, Hkawn San (Joy) greeting the crowd. Afterward, three students from the United States, India, and Germany shared their culture at the event.

Blake Nipper from the United States started the presentation with a question, “What makes America 美 (Beautiful)?" He started the presentation by talking about big American corporations such as "Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Tesla," etc. At the same time, Blake touched upon certain stereotypes that people associate with America, such as celebrities, athletes, parties, political movements, etc. As the presentation continued, Blake mentioned that there is another side of America that people don't recognize; Blake himself comes from a small state in the southern state of the US where everybody is considered as a friend, where the simplicity of life is highly valued, life is full of enjoyable activities such as fishing, sports, and good food. Blake also emphasized that the current political situation does not define America; media news stories do not represent America; instead, what makes America beautiful is its diversity. Blake remarked that as a foreigner, it’s better not to approach an American with preconceptions and assumptions but rather to approach with an open mind, which could lead to friendship and business partnership.

The event continued with the second presenter, Limaonen Longkumer, from Nagaland, situated in the North-Eastern of India. Lima mentioned that being unknown to many people, Nagaland is almost like a hidden treasure. Lima said that the unique history of Nagaland is that the tribes there had a reputation of being fierce warriors who took great pride in taking the heads of their enemies as trophies. However, Lima mentioned social change started when Christianity was introduced to the Naga people; Christianity brought an end to the practice of headhunting in Nagaland and now more than 90% of Naga’s are Christians. Nagaland also has the biggest church in Asia. Moreover, Lima noted that Naga people share similarities with the Karen and Wa tribe from Myanmar and ethnic minorities in the Yunan province of China. He said that the state has16 tribes and 14 languages, with English being the official state language; the state also has huge Western influences. Lima also shed light on Nagaland's interesting facts that despite being the smallest state in India, it is represented at the UNOP. It's a land of festivals and is known as the safest place in India for women. Lima ended the presentation by mentioning that Nagaland is currently on the quest to find a solution to its political problem.

Lastly, Paul Klebert from Germany introduced the audience to his country's name in the German language saying "Deutschland" and illustrated a map of his country. He continued the presentation by introducing the country's leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, delicious German bread, German beer festival "Oktoberfest," and German car brands such as Mercedes, Porches, and BMW. Paul also touched upon the dark side of German history such as the second world war and the Nazi party. Paul also talked about Germany's outstanding achievements, such as in 2019, when the country ranked as one of the top 20 countries with the largest GDP and one of the top 20 export countries. Furthermore, Paul talked about Germany's 4 largest industries, including automobile, mechanical engineering, chemical industry, and the electrical industry. In addition, Paul also talked about famous German brands such as Nivea, Volkswagen, Audi, Adidas, Puma, DHL, and many more. Lastly, he shared an interesting fact about German grammar that the compound words add up together to make single words stretched across a page. Paul concluded the presentation by introducing the audience with the longest German word :

“Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhaupt-Betriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft”.

Attendees participated actively with questions and discussions in the Q&A session. Elsa, 2nd – year GHRM MBA student, remarked that she enjoyed the culture sharing event because she learned about foreign cultures from the natives' perspectives. She said it was also an opportunity for her to meet some new friends who also attended the event. Culture sharing event like this strengthens the culture exchanges between students from different countries and allow students to connect more deeply.

《Guest Speech》Goran Aleksic - the Man with no National Identity: A Citizen of Globalization

Goran Aleksic, a GHRM MBA alumni and Marketing Consultant of the company ‘Home-Brown International Co.’, visited us on 23rd October 2020 – in order to share his experience with students attending the courses: ‘Business Ethics and Social Responsibility’ and ‘Organizational Politics’, which are taught by Dr. Ryan Brading.

Goran began his fascinating presentation stating that he very much dislikes when people ask him: ‘where do you come from?’. This is a difficult question for him because he doesn’t know how to answer it.  Goran was born in Yugoslavia: a country that doesn’t exist anymore. Because of Yugoslavia’s civil war which started in 1991, Goran shared the traumatic and bloody experiences he faced during his childhood, as well as the circumstances that forced his family to abruptly leave Yugoslavia and become refugees in Germany.  It was shocking to hear the very distressing stories he shared with us, such as family members been killed by soldiers, piles of dead bodies in the streets, collecting the used bullets on the streets with his brother, and so on.

By having to deal with a tough childhood, that is, moving from country to country, witnessing the screams and cries of war; Goran constructed his own ‘refugee mentality’ mechanism. From an early age, Goran has had to find ways to mentality adapt to the changing environment and make sure he escapes the scars of war and uncertainty.  His ‘refugee mentality’ approach has helped him keep a positive attitude to life and feel that    “Everything is okay!”.

Goran stressed that whenever he encounters an uncomfortable situation, instead of running away, he embraces any challenges because nothing would ever be worse than the war he and his family had to endure. “I am comfortable by being uncomfortable” he said. Goran’s talk showed us how strong and positive he is and the importance of having a cheerful spirit.  It was truly inspiring chat.

As part of his journey, from Germany his family decided to settle in the US – where he was offered by several American universities – full undergraduate scholarships. Due to his sportsmanship ability universities wanted Goran to add his skills in their soccer teams.    He was so good that they also wanted him to help them in their American football team.  After graduating from Eckerd College in 2007, Goran realized that he had to see the world and started traveling. He first went to Korea for two years, then he went traveling in Europe for about 6 months before he came to Taiwan.  In that process, he fell in love with Asia.

He spent two years in Korea teaching kids English.  He said, “that was the most fulfilling time”.  Working with children fills up that traumatic gap he experienced during his childhood.  Teaching children has helped him sentimentally connect with Asian cultures. He came to Taiwan at the end of 2010 and has stayed here ever since. He has built up a great life in Taiwan by working as a marketing consultant at Home-Brown: a famous local Taiwanese food brand.   He shared his Home-Brown work experience.

His interpersonal skills and lively character have helped him enormously to meet and connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures. He also has a young and beautiful family. He met a girl from South Africa in Taiwan, they married and have two lovely daughters. At the end of the class, he said to the students, “The best thing to do in your life is to travel and work with people that are not like you.You also have to be open and embrace difficult challenges. The relationships that you can build with different cultures are not available in textbooks. DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE!” Goran is truly a guy with great stories to tell. His story and adventures continue…

GHRM MBA Newbie Spotlight: Meet Michal Polacek

1.jpg

Today, we bring another exciting story from our GHRM MBA newbie Michal Polacek.

Michal is from the Czech Republic, and for his bachelor's, he studied civil engineering. He's a big fan of athletics and sports, and for his hobbies, he loves soccer, tennis and recently in Taiwan, he has started to enjoy badminton as well. He's also a nature enthusiast and has made it his goal to climb all the 台灣百岳 (Taiwan 100 Peaks)  and small peaks as well. Before he came to Taiwan, Michal worked as an intern in one of the Czech Republic's biggest companies and was responsible for budgeting and preparation for new projects.

Michal was looking for a reputed MBA program in Kaohsiung, and when he found out that NSYSU was offering an English GHRM MBA program along with free Chinese classes, he decided to apply for the GHRM MBA program. As for the best thing about NSYSU, Michal is enchanted by the serene landscape of NSYSU. He shares:

“I love the location. The view on the ocean is breathtaking. In 2018 when I was choosing University for summer school, I chose NSYSU just because of the beach. Really loved it and I am happy to be back. “

Michal notes that the people he has met in NSYSY are 'interesting' and 'amazing'. As for his favorite course, he's enjoying organizational politics, which is taught by professor Ryan Brading. According to Michal:

“I am in the first grade and have only 5 subjects. But definitely my favorite subject so far is Organizational Politics. The professor way of teaching for me is the most suitable compare to the others. Also the content is something what I like.”

As Michal comes from a completely different academic discipline, he says that he did face some challenges. According to Michal:

“Definitely it is the way of teaching. I am not used to this method of self-studying. As I said I studied engineering where the professors were teaching us what we should know for the exam. Here we have to read a lot of books, papers and articles and make presentations. Then we have a discussion at class about the topic. I still struggle a lot with this way of studying and teaching. I cannot say which way is better, it is just my personal problem to deal with it.”

As of now, Michal is busy with school work and is also working on improving his Chinese skills. He doesn't have a concrete plan, but, in the future, he hopes to work in the building industry.

GHRM MBA is elated to have Michal as part of our family and hope he has a great time at NSYSU. In the coming days, we'll continue to bring stories from our brilliant students.

GHRM MBA & IBMBA Hosts “Career Networking Event” At Sunset Beach Resort

On the 17th of October, 2020, a 'Career Networking Event" was held at Sunset Beach Resort, NSYSU, where GHRM MBA & IBMBA alumni currently working in Taiwan networked with the students and offered essential tips for improving their career prospects in Taiwan.

Before the program began, delicious treats were presented to the attendees to enjoy. The formal event began with Student Association vice president Jonathan greeting the crowd and welcoming the Dean of College of Management, Professor San-Yih Hwang, to deliver the opening speech. Unlike the previous ones, Dr. San Yih-Hwang remarked that the event was specifically designed for international students. He also noted that Taiwan was a better place to live and encouraged international students to seek employment in Taiwan after graduation. He was optimistic that the GHRM MBA & IBMBA degree would be helpful due to the prestige of NSYSU.

The very charismatic alumnus Mr. Matthew Hopkins who is currently working as an International Sales Executive in ZMI Electronics, Ltd., served as the moderator. IBMBA alumni Trent Prestegar and Wendy Tang gave valuable tips on ‘First Job Survival Kit’ from their own experience. Trent is working for the international marketing department in Moshi Taiwan, and he emphasized the importance of networking and encouraged the attendees to join networking groups as well. Wendy, who is currently working as a business development manager in a company called International Cosmetic Suppliers Limited, advised the crowd to have an open mind, to learn Chinese, and to make friends in the workplace.

GHRM MBA alumni Yulia Balkhanova and Michal Ryznar touched upon the topic of “CV: Do’s and Dont’s/job hunting/how to assess a potential employer/ interview preparation’. Yulia is currently working as a project manager in Rost Group and Technology Co., Ltd, and Michal is employed as an assistant sales manager in a start-up company called Amaryllo Inc. Michal encouraged the students to get as many interviews as possible to improve their interviewing skills, which is critical for landing good jobs. He also noted that the GHRM MBA & IBMBA degrees would "open a lot of doors." Julia recalled how she sent numerous job applications after she graduated and advised the students to do the same as it can lead them to a job interview. As for interviews, she urged them not to be nervous and to be prepared for anything.

After Julia and Michal, IBMBA alumni Alexandre Mimault and Daniel Aschauer briefed the attendees on "operating in Taiwanese professional culture-communication styles, cultural differences." Alexandre is working as a vie-e-commerce and marketing business controller in Carrefour Taiwan, and Daniel is currently the deputy general manager in Anton Paar Taiwan. Daniel remarked that the Taiwanese people were positive, caring, and helpful but also noted that the Taiwanese workplace was "not like in university" as it was more competitive, and people didn't like admitting mistakes. According to his experience, Alexandre noted that the line between personal and professional life in Taiwan was “blurry” and advised the students to set a clear distinction when they start working.

GHRM MBA alumnus Robin Slootmaker and IBMBA alumnus Vigor Arisandi spoke on the topic of "skills to develop for the workplace (google analytics, project management techniques)." Robin is currently working as an international sales manager in Biotek Environmental Science Ltd., and Vigor is a UI/UX designer at FUNPODIUM. Robin exhorted the students on the importance of CRM systems and encouraged them to learn about CRM systems as soon as possible. He also gave tips on presentation skills and advised them to keep presentations “clean, simple, and clear." Vigor also talked about his shift from accounting to a career in UI/UX design and advised the students to focus on what they want to do.

After the program was over, the alumni still stuck around despite their busy schedules to interact and network with the current students. It was a memorable event catching up with GHRM MBA & IBMBA alumni, who were all doing fantastic in their respective careers. The tips and advice will undoubtedly be advantageous for students to jumpstart their careers.

Sabina Ou Reminisces About Her Dual Degree Program At Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom)

1.jpg

GHRM MBA program offers students the chance to get a Dual Degree from prestigious universities like Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Today, we share Sabina Ou’s experience in NTU (United Kingdom).

Sabina is from Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She has a bachelor's in applied English of hospitality and tourism from National Kaohsiung University Of Hospitality And Tourism. Currently, she is working on her Dual Degree from GHRM MBA (Taiwan) and International Business (NTU). She found out about the Dual Degree program through the university website, and after doing her research, she considered it the best choice for her. As to why she chose NTU, it wasn't just the first-class education but the opportunity to see the other side of the world. She shares:

“I believed that the programme was a precious learning opportunity to see the world. By studying abroad, I could immerse myself in a Western culture with incredible, unique outlooks, customs, activities and go beyond a purely academic experience. The benefits include the opportunity to see new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of the host nation. In addition, I won't be limited to traveling in just the nation but get to see neighbouring countries as well, including travelling through various parts of Europe.”

During her time in London, she found ‘International Human Resource” to be the most interesting course. It allowed her to meet different people from all corners of the world and learn about each other’s cultural differences. From the course, she learned how to build a strong team. However, she also considers the cultural differences to be the biggest challenge during her dual degree experience. As most of her teammates were from different countries, the cultural norms, accents, and lingo acted as barriers, but they all took the time to understand each other. Eventually, they were able to overcome the obstacles and perform exceptionally.

NTU Dual Degree experience was also full of beautiful memories for Sabina. As for the most memorable one, she shares that it was the 'peer-to-peer language gathering’:

“The peer-to-peer language gathering was my favourite part of the programme. Studying in the UK grants me the chance to completely immerse myself in new languages, and there is no better way to learn than to dive right in. In addition to the considerable language practice I get solely in day to day life, Nottingham Trent University also offers peer-to-peer language learning activities (such as Global Lounge) for a more formal education of language learning.”

Throughout her dual degree experience, Sabina learned various things that will be advantageous for her future career. She considers the experience as a one in a lifetime opportunity and encourages GHRM MBA students to participate in the Dual Degree program. She says:

“For most students, this time may be the only opportunity they ever get to travel abroad for a long period of time. Eventually, we will find a job, and the opportunity to study abroad may turn out to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is of vital to take this opportunity to travel the world with no commitments but to study and experience new cultures. Studying abroad is an experience that will blow our mind.”

GHRM MBA is delighted that Sabina had a wonderful time in Nottingham and found the Dual Degree program valuable. GHRM MBA is one of the few premier programs in Taiwan that offers a Dual Degree opportunity. Having a Dual Degree allows more professional options, and we encourage our students to grab the opportunity and make the most out of it.

GHRM MBA & IBMBA Family Enjoy An Extravagant Luncheon At Sunset Beach Resort NSYSU

On the 25th of September 2020, NSYSU GHRM MBA & IBMBA students and faculty members spent some quality time and enjoyed an appetizing lunch at the Sunset Beach Resort, NSYSU. Here’s how it went down:

The event started at noon, and upon entering the venue, everyone was given a colored thread and had to sit in the same table with others who also had threads of the same color. It was an excellent idea as it helped the students to forge new friendships.

President of Student Association Joy greeted the attendees and called upon Dr. Sharon Wang, Program Director, to give the opening speech. Dr.Wang exhorted the students to enjoy the journey in the university and introduced faculty members including former Dean of College of Management Dr.Shyh-Jer Chen, Deputy Director of International Relations Office Wee Kheng Tan, and professors Jeeyeon Kim, Ryan Brading, Francois Bouchetox, David Anderson, and Kim Choy Chung who were also present at the venue.

Outstanding GHRM IBMBA students Evelyn Lee and Justine (Taiwan In My Eyes) and Leanne and Keval (APYE Online and GSIIC) were felicitated for their respective victories. During the event, the multi-talented Ann Tretyakova (GHRM MBA 2nd year student) belted two songs, one in English and another in Russian, to a warm reception from the attendees. Finally, the delicious meals, including a wide array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, were presented to the attendees' delight.

One of the most memorable moments during the luncheon was a game played between the professors and the students. The professors made three statements, two right and one wrong, and the students had to guess the incorrect one. The game ignited quite a lot of laughter and also showed how much the students knew their professors. After the function, a candid group picture was clicked to commemorate the event.

Elsa, 2nd-year GHRM MBA student, remarked that she enjoyed the savory dishes and the opportunity to mingle and build new friendships with others from the department. Despite their busy schedule, SA members always do an impeccable job at organizing unique and exciting events. Get-togethers like this strengthen the bond between the students, professors, and faculty members and promote a cordial environment.

She says that the best moment of her life in NSYSU was the first day that she joined the University as she was very excited and blessed to be here. Her favorite subject is Organizational Behavior, which was taught by Professor Konstantin, as she found it to be very interesting and useful. She particularly points out the 'workshop interviews,' 'group discussion,' and 'presentations' to be advantageous for her future endeavors.

She finds the GHRM MBA program to be very practical, which she says will certainly help her with her career opportunities. Sushila is positive that she will find a good job in a leading company after she finishes her studies.

To the new and prospective students, Sushila shares some wonderful advice. She says:

“I would like to advise the current students of NSYSU, if you get a chance to study in this program, then you should join this program. Enjoy your study in NSYSU, make new friends, learn new cultures and languages. Try to do your assignments and homework on time and study hard and enjoy it.”

We are proud to have Sushila in our GHRM MBA family. GHRM MBA continuously strives to provide its students with the best education and opportunities so that they can succeed in whatever field they choose to foray into.

2020 NSYSU GHRM IBMBA Orientation: Start Of A New Chapter

118991827_3277930739012566_2678267084214875035_n.jpg

The annual International program (GHRM MBA and IBMBA) orientation took place on the 5th of September 2020. For the first time, the orientation was held at Lasertek International Conference Hall, which is mostly reserved for important international conferences. After the registration, sharing of the new student handbook, and a little bit of mingling, the event went underway.

Ryan Fernandez, GHRM MBA alumnus, introduced a series of team-building events. The team-building event wasn't just fun and games but contained hidden life lessons that Ryan disclosed after the games concluded. He advised the new students to be nice to the professors, staff, and to each other. Ryan also shared about the priceless values of good communication, leadership, listening, support, trust, adaptivity, and ownership/accountability.

After the exciting team building event, the Deputy Director, Thijs Velema, welcomed the new students on behalf of the department. Dean of NSYSU, Dr. San-Yih Hwang, started the faculty introduction and briefed the new students on the avenues and opportunities provided by the university and encouraged them to travel around and immerse in Taiwanese culture.

Professors Jeeyeon Kim, Frank Wong, and Kim Choy Chung also introduced themselves and discussed the courses they teach and their research interests. Unfortunately, Professor Ryan Brading and Director Of International Programs, Dr. Sharon Wang, couldn't join the event, but they both sent a short video introducing themselves and greeting the new students. After that, Deputy Director Thijs Velema expressed his hopes of engaging and teaching the new students as well as learning from each other for the next two years.

After group photo secessions, members of different student organizations introduced their group such as John from NSYSU student’s fraternity AV Takao Montania as well as Elon, Remco, Jetsin, and Sam from the university’s zealous Dragon Boat team. Lima from 2nd year GHRM MBA program touched on the topic of cultural differences and cross-cultural working tips and advised the new students to find strength in diversity and finally, the President of Student Association Joy, and vice-presidents Jonathan and Sam introduced themselves and presented about the responsibilities they are in charge of and the assistance offered by them.

James Tseng from Taipei, one of the new students for the GHRM MBA Program, commented that he enjoyed the event, particularly the team building games organized by Ryan. He says that he is looking forward to learning about business as it will be his first time as well as meeting different people.

Kudos to Student Association for planning, coordinating, and executing such a meticulously planned orientation and especially for ensuring that even the students that couldn’t make it to the event due to various hurdles could attend virtually. To the new students, The International Program Office will take every measure possible to ensure that you have all that is needed to succeed in whatever fields you want to foray into.

International Programs Alumni Gathering Event

The IBMBA and GHRM MBA program not only prioritize the academic excellence of the program but also strengthen the alumni network. This year, IBMBA and GHRM MBA Alumni Gathering event was organized on the 1st of August at General Sun Li Jen Residence restaurant in Taipei. The event celebrated the close and friendly community of alumni, faculty and staff in the program.  There were more than 50 alumni working around Taiwan gathered together to enjoy lunch with the professors of the College of Management. The professors who represented our programs were Program Director Prof. Sharon Wang, Deputy Director Prof. Thijs Velema, and Prof. Frank Wong. The success of the event would not be achievable without the arrangement of Cindy Lin, Jenny Lee and the international student association team.

The event not only flashed back all those beautiful old memories of the alumni when they were at NSYSU but also recreated new wonderful memories and strengthened the relationship and friendship between alumni.  Smiles, hugs, funny conversations and lots of positive emotions were the order of the whole event—not forgetting the delicious Taiwanese foods! It’s incredible to feel the warm connection between all our alumni and how easy they can reconnect with the faculty and staff.

The event started with the opening speech of Prof. Sharon Wang. Prof. Wang touched upon the recent extraordinary achievements of NSYSU and College of Management and the event continued with the passionate welcome to all alumni from Prof. Velema. Subsequently, the quiz section was conducted and winners bagged prizes home. Later on, the delicious lunch was served together with the amazing singing performance of first year GHRM MBA student, Anna Tretiakova. While the songs Егор Сесарев, Все в твоих руках, and No Roots were sung beautifully by Anna, our Alumni joined with the cheering and a little dance move, the room was full of excitement and good vibes.

This event also had surprising challenges, two surprise cards were stuck under two chairs. The two lucky alumni who happened to sit on those chairs were awarded with the surprise gifts, and also had to complete the challenges.  One alumnus was asked to take a selfie with professor Frank Wong, Cindy and Jenny, another alumnus was asked to invite Program Director Wang to the stage and dance together. Besides that, we also had social media contest, alumni were very excited to take pictures with former friends and faculty and posted the pictures on facebook with the hashtag #GhrmIbmbaNsysuAlumniGathering2020, three lucky participants were chosen to win the red envelope.

With great food and great people, it was truly a day with lots of fun, positive vibes, entertainment, and beautiful memories. With no doubt, the alumni party is one of the best events that everyone is looking forward to. It’s bringing joy and creating unforgettable moments to us.

Alumni Highlight: Catching Up With Mkhithika Karen Nkululeko

Hello friends,

Today we bring you an interview with our beloved alumna Mkhithika Karen Nkululeko.

1.jpg

Karen is a Zimbabwean born British citizen. In NSYSU, she was also known as Ke Jie. She is enthusiastic about traveling the world, learning about cultures and cuisines, cooking, reading, and playing squash. She completed her undergraduate with Psychology (Honours) as a major and Human Resource Management as a minor. She has a Dual Masters in MSc International Business from the UK and GHRM MBA from NSYSU Taiwan.

When Karen embarked on her Dual MSc program with Nottingham Trent University, it was especially for the opportunity to get a dual degree, and that's when she heard about NSYSU GRHM MBA, which was exactly the degree she was interested in. She was always intrigued by business, especially entrepreneurship, as well as human relations, so she found the GHRM MBA program befitting in relation to her future plans.

During her time in NSYSU, Karen participated in a lot of activities which she immensely enjoyed and felt proud to be a part of. Karen vividly shares:

“I took part in Dragon Boat 2017 which I enjoyed immensely and felt proud to have been part of. It was not something I had done before but something that I definitely would love to do again. I also took part in a cultural program that saw different people visiting Taichung where we also got to see paper being made, among other things. I was also asked by my Marketing Professor to do a cultural teaching activity with the kindergarten children of NSYSU. I imparted knowledge and experience to them of my birth country and shared pictures of the life there and what they would like if they visited. It was a very interesting experience because the children were fascinated, the questions they asked showed their curiosity and overall, it was a wonderful experience for all of us.”

Karen also completed a Dual Degree program with NTU, which was her first and only dual degree program. She found the experience enriching as she had to learn mandarin and also got a hands-on experience with a business in Kaohsiung. Karen says that the dual degree program was "definitely worth the experience." According to her, studying in NSYSU was intensive, but she also learned a lot and found it engaging and informative. As for her most memorable experience, Karen says it's the people she met, her friends and food:

“The people I met, the friends I made and the food. The community was very accommodating in terms of language, help and understanding each other. Most of all it was the people really, I have never come across such hospitality in all my travels. I miss them all.”

When Karen first started her studies in NSYSU, she was worried about the language and accommodation as she didn't know much about Kaohsiung, but Cindy from program office made the entire process smooth and helped her find accommodation as well.

As of now, Karen is running a small business in social care with information technology in the UK, and she's also working as a Researcher in Occupational Psychology. Karen found the GHRM MBA program very helpful in helping her understand the international world of business as well as with her research studies. According to Karen:

“It helped in my understanding of the international world of business. It gave me exposure to the cultural knowledge I did not have and how to conduct business in the different cultural contexts. So, it broadened my horizons of running, marketing and managing a business and more so internationally in the not so far off future. It also helped me continue with my Research studies after graduation.”

For the current students of GHRM MBA, Karen also has valuable advice to share:

“Utilize the services, resources and extra events that are provided by the University, it is all worthwhile and will definitely point you in a certain direction. If ever you feel lost or uncertain you have nothing to worry about you are in exceptional hands, you are with an institution that truly cares about its students. I can attest to that.”

GHRM MBA is delighted that Karen is doing well in her career and encourages her to continue making strides. We hope all GHRM MBA students will be able to emulate her success.

AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung bagged the Committe’s Choice Award at Si Wan College’s Life Imitation Art Challenge

Together with GHRM MBA students Hkawn San (Joy) from Myanmar and Lê Ngọc Bích Thủy (Sam) from Vietnam, AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung were announced as one of winners in the recently concluded Si Wan College’s Life Imitation Art Challenge. This fraternity with a creative submission in imitating a classical art bagged the Committee’s Choice Award. Students Wu Yi-Chin (Taiwan, IBMBA), Tran Thi Mai Hanh (Vietnam, IMAPA), Hkawn San (Myanmar, GHRM), and Jirka Libal (Czech Republic, IBMBA Alumni), together with Moritz Valentin Märki (Switzerland, IBMBA) who took the photo, partook in the award-winning submission.

About their fraternity

Their group have shared to us that AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung is the first fraternity in Taiwan, established in 2017. Their goal is to let students have a nice students’ life outside the classroom. Therefore, they hold different kinds of social events throughout the semester in order to generate a lifelong friendship between their members. They shared to us that they are political and religious neutral, and they are open to students of all subjects and all nationalities.

On their inspiration to join the competition

When we asked them, what was their inspiration in joining the competition, they told us that they saw a chance to use their capacity as fraternity. They wanted to do this together and demonstrate their fraternity, that is why they chose a relatively unknown drawing from the 19th century to show that the tradition shown in the painting is still alive today. AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung also wanted to be advertised to art students because they think it would be good to know creative people since for them, as business or marketing people, they will have to work together with designers.

On their preparation for the competition

Confidently answering our question on how they prepared for that, they told us that they didn’t have to prepare that much for the competition since they are already a good team! One of the key points they shared to us is that, they chose an original painting that already shows a fraternity so they could just take the photo as they are. As they mentioned, their aim is to show that their tradition is still alive.

On their award-winning submission

On the picture is the der Landesvater from Georg Mühlberg, which is a group of German fraternity students at the end of the 19th century. The art shows people shaking hands who were also using a rapier to stab their fraternity hats. They told us that even if the extraordinary scenery might look strange, it is still a tradition (der Landesvater) worth acknowledging.

Sharing to us what is Der Landesvater, they told us that is a tradition that started in the early ages of student’s history within the 17th century and had several changes in its meaning during the time. Originally students used to destroy their hat and repair it with a decorative symbol to show their love for a woman or their loyalty to their country leader or political idea.

They also told us that since the establishment of student fraternities we know today, the meaning of this tradition actually changed. The fraternity students now use Landesvater to celebrate their friendship usually after a successful semester they spend together at the university.

Again, our generous applause to AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung for bagging the award! The office believes that your organization will continue to foster your organization’s goal to help the students and build a happy and friendly environment for them. More power to the AV Takao Montania zu Kaohsiung!

The Graduation Ceremony of Class 2020

GRADUATION CEREMONY 2020

After two years of hard-working and going through all the challenges of a Master's student life, our students from the International Programs could come such a long way to be able to get themselves to the Graduation Ceremony. The graduates of the International Business MBA (IBMBA) and Global Human Resource Management MBA (GHRM MBA), together with their family members, celebrated their success while being reunited with their friends and classmates. Also presented in the ceremony was the Dean of the College of Management and Director, professors, program alumni, and staff from the International Programs. This year, the event was held in Sunset Beach Resort with some special outdoor activities, which is a unique experience that you can only have in National Sun Yat-sen University.

We understand that Graduation is the beginning of their new stage of life as they fly out from the warmth and comfort of the university and face the adventure that lay ahead. Examinations are finally over, scruffiness is replaced with fancy clothes, and parents admire their children for reaching a long marathon finish line. Furthermore, Graduation is more than just tossing a cap in the air or dressing up or having a valuable piece of paper. It is about celebrating milestones, being proud of the journey, and sharing great memories with your beloved friends and families.

The event was an impressive graduation ceremony for the students. Everyone went through all levels of emotion: excitement, joy, and extraordinary. The Graduation Ceremony was held on June 4th, 2020, and hosted by Cindy, an officer from the International Programs Office, and Ryan Fernandez, a GHRM MBA alumnus.

The event started by an opening remark that made by the Dean, Professor Hwang San –Yih, to welcome our honored guests, family members, graduate students, and wished them every success and in their future careers. Following, the alumnus representative Mathew Hopkins, who shared his own experiences, not only encouraged the graduates to try different things and also provided valuable tips for job hunting. The graduates representative Laura Chiang from IBMBA and Justine Pura from GHRM MBA also delivered their speeches, recalling their journeys in achieving their degrees, and showing their gratefulness to all professors and friends.

"I have pictured my family doing a five-day tour around Taiwan after the graduation party and me to see how beautiful this country is, for them to see the country that has been my second home, for them to see that I made the right choice returning in this country to do my Master's after being an exchange student and for them to see how happier I am with my life right now." – Justine Pura, GHRM MBA 107

"Thanks to the International Program for providing knowledge and helping me build a great foundation to support my future business career. To all of my friends, I cherished every moment with you at every stage of our students' life. Wish all of us could carry the confidence and strength to achieve our dreams". – Laura Chiang, IBMBA 107

Tassel turning is the most momentous moment of the ceremony. The Dean, Director, and professors and faculty members will see the students on the stage to do the tassel turning and handing them the diploma. This activity proves that our students have reached the milestone of transforming the fruitful academic achievements into an academic degree at National Sun Yat-sen University. At the end of the ceremony, the graduates were given the chance to pay their appreciation and saluted to all the faculty members, thanked for their hard works and guidance not only in academic field as a professor but also in life as a mentor. With the wishes and expectations, the graduates are encouraged to face future challenges and explore their bright future.

Graduation is not the end of our journey but an advanced of our relationship into friends and family. On behalf of all faculty members, we want to say: "Congratulations Graduate. You have worked hard to achieve your goals, and now you are on your way to seek new vistas, dream new dreams, embark on who you are, embrace life with passion and keep reaching for your star. Go for it!"

GHRM MBA student Zhanna Samodurova bags Outstanding Graduate Student Performance Award of Taiwan Government Scholarship

“You need to understand how many things you can take. Estimate your skills and ability. Don’t take too much, otherwise, you will lose everything.” - These are the words by Zhanna, a GHRM MBA student at National Sun Yat-sen University, who is a recipient of the Outstanding Performances Graduate of Taiwan.

Apart from being an exemplary student, Zhanna from Moscow, Russia, is a Taiwan Government scholar, a member of the Dragon Boat team, president of the International Programs Students Association, and an intern as well. Her amazing credentials will make you wonder how she can balance her academic and extra-curricular life. Want to know her story? Then keep reading.

On selecting her prospect university

Before joining NSYSU College of Management’s GHRM MBA program, Zhanna earned her degree in Materials Engineering in Moscow. But how did she know about NSYSU and GHRM? A few years back, she did an exchange at a university in Hsinchu City. She already had an idea of how beautiful Taiwan is, so she decided to come back to do her master’s degree. But for her, Hsinchu is small and wanted to be in a bigger city. For her, she only has Taipei and Kaohsiung as her choices. She did intensive research on which schools she wanted to do her master’s degree, by checking the requirements, courses offered, environment, pictures, and opinions by the people about the university. Apart from the scenery that NSYSU has, being situated between the seas and the mountains, being one of the top universities in Taiwan is what Zhanna helped her select NSYSU as her prospective university.

On applying for her scholarship

Zhanna applied for the Ministry of Education scholarship in the Taiwan Embassy in Moscow, Russia. She submitted the requirements which included her diploma, English certificate, grades, and other pertinent documents. Having experience as an exchange student in Taiwan and finishing her degree with excellency gave her an advantage in achieving the scholarship. Zhanna mentioned that her scholarship would be revoked if she wouldn’t be able to be accepted in the university. She said she was competing for two competitions, and she was thankful she got accepted in both.

On selecting her degree

As mentioned earlier, Zhanna dwelled in the engineering field on her bachelor’s. She then wanted to change her area from engineering to business as she believes that it will make her area diverse. She also applied for both programs, IB and GHRM. She got accepted to GHRM and she is happy about that. Not about how difficult one program is from the other, but Zhanna realized that the GHRM is the perfect MBA for her. The courses offered in the program are the courses she really wants and what she pictures on an MBA degree. She believes that this degree helped her meet new people, develop her communication skill, and make her build her confidence on stage.

On having an active student life

Apart from quality education, NSYSU has a lot to offer, from sports to clubs and activities. Zhanna, being a dynamic person, also participated in numerous activities. First, she joined the NSYSU Dragon Boat Team. She participated for one year and brought the flag of NSYSU in several competitions. Then she joined the Students Association of International Programs last semester and ran as president. She and her team conducted numerous activities for the students of GHRM and IB and helped the college in several activities. Wanting to serve the student body for another semester, she continued her presidency in this semester. Apart from being the students’ association president, she’s also doing her internship. Zhanna mentioned that internship will be beneficial for her, in her developing her skills and adding essential experiences in her resume. Her professors helped her get the internship and she is exploring how business works in Taiwan.

On school-life balance

On asking Zhanna if she finds it difficult being a graduate student, at the same time, being active in student association and being an intern, she said, “I wouldn’t say so.” For her, the key solution for the lifestyle she has is her organizing skill, which is an HRM concept. It may sound simple, but for her, it helps her so much. According to Zhanna, “You should know what your agenda for the day is, from waking up in the morning until you go to bed.” She’s very happy with this lifestyle and she loves it. She has time to enjoy and meet new people, going out with them, and have fun. Zhanna also mentioned that people who also wanted to have the same lifestyle as to what she has must know what’s adequate and what’s too much. “Learn to refuse if you don’t really want to, and if you won’t be able to finish it on a good level.”, she added. For Zhanna, students must build small and good habits at the beginning, habits that will discipline you, and these habits will affect your future life, whether as a student or as a professional.

“Be organized and be honest to yourself”. One of the most remarkable lines Zhanna left during the interview. Let us congratulate her for bagging a prestigious award for NSYSU! Congratulations!
